Sitting meditation practice (shamatha) on weekdays. A combination of sitting and walking meditation on Sundays. On Maitri Bhavana and Sadhana of Mahamudra evenings, those practices replace the group sitting meditation. There is no Sunday group meditation practice when a Shambhala Training Level 1 is taking place on the weekend. If you are new to meditation, you are encouraged to first attend a Learn to Meditate session on Wednesday evening or an Introduction to Medtitation Workshop on Saturday morning to receive meditation instruction. Read more about meditation.
On Tuesday evenings during the Cultivating Gentleness and Strength and Smile at Fear courses, group meditation practice will be from 19:00-19:20 (see dates above).

Meditation on loving-kindness for the seriously ill. Sometimes it can be difficult to relate to others' sickness and suffering. We may feel helpless to help them or blame ourselves for being fearful or uncomfortable. This practice cultivates generosity and openness to the suffering of others, offering them health, spaciousness and compassion. Through developing the willingness and strength of mind to really look at our own and other's suffering, we can give up the selfish habits that close us off from others. As Trungpa Rinpoche says, "[Maitri Bhavana] involves developing a sense of immense generosity and being willing to suffer for others. One's own personal gain and achievement could be shared--in fact, given up." Please add to the list posted at the Centre a week before the practice date the names and illnesses of relatives and friends who are seriously ill, physically or mentally. You should include someone because you feel a personal concern for their suffering, such as a grandparent dying of cancer. Each practice session includes sitting meditation, tonglen (sending and taking) meditation, and a short liturgy.
Open to all.

The Sadhana of Mahamudra was written by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and contains the essence of his teachings for the West. This practice speaks directly to how we can overcome our confusion and the spiritual materialism of our times, and find profound truth in the ordinary phenomenal world. The sadhana consists of meditation and chants, and lasts about an hour. It is done regularly at all Shambhala Centres on or near full and new moon days, when our moods and thought patterns tend to be most unruly. The Sadhana of Mahamudra has been acknowledged as terma. Terma are teachings that were concealed by the great Tibetan teacher Padmasambhava and other teachers for the sake of future generations, and are rediscovered at the auspicious time when they are needed. The Sadhana of Mahamudra practice is rich with symbols that may seem strange to some new practitioners. Don't expect to understand it fully the first time you do it. As with other teachings, understanding develops through practice and contemplation. So we encourage newcomers to come and experience this wonderful sadhana. The chant leader will be available to answer questions and will provide a simple explanation of how to do the practice before it begins.
Open to all.
